The 3640-3510 BC eruption of Chachimbiro volcanic complex, Ecuador: a violent directed blast produced by a satellite dome
Abstract:
Chachimbiro volcanic complex (0 28'N, 78 17'W, 4034 m asl) is located in the Imbabura province, 80 km north to Quito (Ecuador's capital). This complex edifice is built on the oriental flank of the Western Cordillera (Fig. 1). Only little information exists on Chachimbiro Holocene activity [1] but a recent investigation has permitted to identify at least four eruptions in the last 6 ky [2]. During this period, the 3640–3510 BC eruption is probably the largest. We used different tools from earth sciences such as geochronology, geochemistry, and sedimentology to understand the origin and dynamic of this eruption.
