The Algebraic Face of the Alexandroff One Point Compactification

Abstract:

We give a characterization, in algebraic terms, of the Alexandroff one point compactification of a locally compact Hausdorff space. In fact, we prove that if (X, τ) is a locally compact Hausdorff space, then ( X,τ) is its Alexandroff one point compactification if and only if τ is a maximal ideal of τ.
