A constructuvist approach for the teaching of software measurement

Abstract:

Software measurement is one of the key factors that influence Software Process Improvement (SPI); however, software organizations struggle in the implementation of software measurement programs. One of the reasons is attributed to the lack of attention of this subject in universities. The École de technologie supérieure (ETS) has conducted a series of studies to identify the priorities of software measurement teaching at the undergraduate level in order to contribute filling this gap. The priorities were identified in terms of 1) topics that should be covered in university programs; 2) the levels of learning that should be reached by students; and 3) the skills that should be instilled in students to complement their education in software measurement. All of these elements have been considered for the development of an educational framework which aims to the enhancement of the teaching and learning of software measurement at the undergraduate level. It is expected that, in the long term, software development companies can deal in a better way in the implementation of software measurement programs as part of their SPI initiatives. This 4 hours tutorial will present the structure of the educational framework as well as an example of its application. The intents of the tutorial are to share the results of our findings and to receive feedback for the improvement of the framework.
