The Gender Gap broad the path for Women in STEM
Abstract:
Currently there is a great movement to encourage women to choose careers related to the fields of science and technology, since, by different factors historically this gender has had very little representation in these areas of knowledge. In accordance with the above, below are the results of an investigation developed with the purpose of contributing to know the causes for which there is a low level of participation of Ecuadorian women in the STEM areas. For this purpose, two instruments were developed for high school students and students in the last levels of the careers offered by the Faculty of Engineering in Applied Sciences of the Universidad Técnica del Norte (UTN). The results obtained reflect that the high school students, who have not yet decided on their university career, show that they are interested in learning more about the areas of engineering. On the other hand, the most relevant aspect in the answers of the engineering students was that before starting their career they were most concerned about being able to obtain good results with their accumulated knowledge. All of the above leads us to develop motivational programs that allow us to capture the interest of female students in STEM careers by emphasizing the strengths and possibilities of success in this important field.
