The ICT competences of students entering university: An experience in the Faculty of Health Sciences of a Latin American university


Abstract:

Introduction: The massive adoption of information and communication technologies, has helped the professional practice in the area of health to progress, as well as the interaction between the health provider and the patient. In this sense, it is necessary to promote the development of this type of competence in the training of future professionals in the area of health sciences. This paper presents the results of the diagnosis of the information and communication technologies competences of the university students that entering Health Sciences Faculty in the National University of Chimborazo. Material and methods: A quantitative, descriptive study was carried out, in which a questionnaire was applied to determine the perception that the university students have on the management of their information and communication technologies competences. Results: The results showed that the most of the students consulted are not completely competent in terms of knowledge and use of computer tools. Conclusion: There are few actions related to the computer where students consider themselves competent. This means that is necessary to train them in computer skills related to the management and generation of information, as well as the diffusion of knowledge and reinforcement of those competences related to the access and use of this information.
