The IT crowd: Are we stereotypes?

Abstract:

The results of an empirical study conducted in Spain about the way in which IT professionals are portrayed in the media, such as television, is presented. Analysis of adjective classifications is presented by building a taxonomy of two distinct groups such as adjectives that denote personality traits versus physical traits. The subjects answers indicate that 80% of them exhibited a very low level of interest in the profession. The answers by the students in the study suggest that negative media representations are likely to aid in attracting future IT workers to the profession. It is suggested to encourage collaboration between organization and academic institutions in attracting new people to IT roles and for professional associations to assume an active role in communicating IT working techniques.
