The New Volcanic Hazard Map of Guagua Pichincha Volcano, 2019
Abstract:
Guagua Pichincha (0 10'14" S/78 36'46" W) is the youngest part of the Pichincha Volcanic Complex, a potentially active volcano, located on the Western Cordillera. It is a compound stratovolcano (4784m asl) located 12 km W of Quito (capital of Ecuador). The youngest eruptive center in Guagua Pichincha Volcano is Cristal Dome, which is formed mostly by dacitic rocks (63-70 SiO2 wt.%) and is situated on the center of a large landslide scar open to the W. Deposits of ash fall and mudflows (secondary lahars) have been found in the Quito basin, and deposits of pyroclastic flows have been identified on the sparsely populated western flanks.
