The Paleocene of the high chain (Betic Cordillera) and implications for the geodynamic evolution of the south Iberian paleomargin.

Abstract:

No formal formations have been defined taking into account the structural deformation and low quality of the Paleocene outcroppings open platform sediments from the High Chain area (Internal Subbetic, Málaga Province). Nevertheless, the better series are indicated, and a division in two depositional sequences are proposed: Lower Paleocene Depositional Sequence (SDPI) and Upper Paleocene Depositional Sequence (SDPS), the later being sub-divided in two parasequences (P1 and P2) obtained from the clay mineralogy. The sequences have been defined on the basis of unconformity surfaces interpreted as due to tectonic or eustatic processes. It is proposed the geodynamic evolution of this materials belonging to the South-Iberian paleomargen according with stratigraphical, mineralogical and sedimentary analysis data and shows also the main characteristics of source areas during this period.
