The Role of Low-Cost Digitalisation in Improving Operations Management

Abstract:

Financial resource limitations and lack of technological awareness are two of the most common barriers to digitalisation in Small-and-Medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In response to these challenges, recent research has focused on digital solution areas that can be deployed at a low cost in companies. In this article, we focus on how these solution areas benefit SME operations. In particular, we identify and categorise the value activities these solution areas enable and their potential benefits for the operations management function. Furthermore, this article proposes a conceptual model for the role of low-cost digital solutions in creating operational benefits and describes the opportunities that arise from it.
