The Synthesis and the Applications of IPNs based on Smart Polymers

Abstract:

This chapter discusses the state-of-the-art techniques for the synthesis and the applications of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) and semi-interpenetrating networks (SIPNs) based on smart polymers, mainly in biomedical applications as actuators and artificial organs, chemistry, and ionic separations. The syntheses of these IPNs were conducted using ionizing radiation for controlling polymerization and crosslinking. Novel architectures developed from the grafting of IPNs onto polymers to increase their mechanical properties and their response velocities were also described. Some examples of smart IPN or SIPN hydrogels are given, and their potential in the biomedical field and in ionic separations is outlined.
