The cochineal in Riobamba and Latacunga jurisdiction: the economic project that was not

Abstract:

This work follows an economic project on cochineal cultivation in Riobamba and Latacunga jurisdiction, in 1792. The approach (although it did not materialize) came from the Society of Friends of Quito. Then the motivations, approach, debate and execution of the idea were explored, evidencing the voices of councilors and bishops in the process. So that, among other documents, this research is sustained by two key primary sources: the files found in the National Archive of Ecuador's History ANE (in Spanish), and the statutes of the Economic Society of the Friends of Quito. The methodology seeks to explore the discourses from their enunciation place, situating them in local and global time and space. Besides to do a normative exploration of the councilors' obligations and compare them with the historical events to explore their legitimacy of intervention in the project.
