The construction ofwomanhood in Aristophanes’ Lysistrata

Abstract:

Aristophanes uses mythical paradigms in constructing the female gender in Lysistrata. Such paradigms effectively evidentiate womens competence in delivering a discourse that is fair to the city. We aim to present these models embedded in political (the Peloponnesian War) and sexual themes (the sex strike held by women to put an end to the war), that intersect throughout the play.
