The fabrication of andean particularism


Abstract:

As recently formulated by Frank Salomon the project of Andeanists with regard to the colonial era is to explore pre-columbian survivals (1)(from ethnic identities to mental operations). According to this leading scholar, survivals are in turn attributable to thousands of anonymous acts of resistance that thwart the imposition of western modes. This two fold analytic strategy is extremely common at least in programmatic statements. It has the virtue of pointing to the overwhelming importance of the past for Andean colonial society. However, the recall, continuation and reinstatement of history in the colonial epoch is a much more complex phenomenon than the survival/resistance thesis implies.
