The impact of Covid-19 on immigration journalism in Spain: Accelerate continuities and posible breakdowns

Abstract:

This article analyzes the impact of the Covid-19 crisis and the lockdown on journalistic work focused on immigration. To do this, 5 in-depth interviews - telematics - have been carried out with journalists specialized in this field. The impact of Covid-19 has been very high on the daily work of these journalists and we identified how some trends that had been detected before the pandemic, like the use of telematic resources or job insecurity increased. Also, the possibility of looking for news and alternative sources to the official ones has suffered, due to mobility difficulties. Finally, it should be noted that some changes have been detected in the approach to the immigration issue, which has taken on relevance in the second phase of lockdown and has led to issues not very discussed so far by the media, like the contribution to the labor market of immigrants or its economic impact.
