The industrial specialization in the context of economic integration: the Ecuadorian case

Abstract:

The main purpose of this work is to determine whether the process of economic integration caused changes in specialization levels as predicted by theorists. The authors construct and analyze Gini specialization indices for twenty-two Ecuadorian provinces and twenty-six industrial sectors for the period between 1980 and 2010 with data from the National Economic Census (CENEC) corresponding to III Census of Manufacturing and Mining, II Census of Commerce and Service that took place in 1980; and III National Economic Census, which took place in 2010. Results show that the commerce's liberalization-first level of economic integration-generated changes in specialization within provinces in industrial activity in Ecuador, which resulted in important changes in the country's economy.
