The international tourist flows. half a century of evolution

Abstract:

This paper analyzes the behaviour of international tourist flows from the middle of the last century, in order to relate it to economic growth and international trade. Our hypothesis is that this type of tourist demand is flexible, if compared to other international exports, to recover from the successive crises experienced by the world economy. Our hypothesis is confirmed and we conclude that the international tourist flows has a pro-cyclical behaviour and that these cycles are more intense than the world economy evolution and other goods and services' exports.
