The invention of homo economicus and the expulsion of ethics from economics. A way without return?

Abstract:

Through a literature review, this article analyses the relationships between Ethics and Economics, and the process to which the invention of the concept of homo economicus signified the separation of both disciplines that have been seen as different intellectual domains since then. However, the work highlights some aspects of the criticism of prominent authors like A. Sen and A. O. Hirschman on neoclassical economic agency. These criticisms show that the link between both fields of thought had not been completely and definitively broken. One the last section, as conclusion, we suggest that nowadays there is evidence in the research field and in the social action terrain of such a link is being restored improving theoretical and practical capabilities of Economic Sciences to deal with main current human challenges.
