The paradox of reproducibility improvement in empirical research in software engineering: Thoughts derived from a case study

Abstract:

Numerous papers focus on improving the reproducibility of empirical studies in Software Engineering. However, several of the solutions proposed are complex and difficult to apply. This motivated us to study one of these proposals, as a Case Study, from a reproducibility perspective based on communication, knowledge, and motivation aspects. As a result, we found that, although the analyzed proposal is highly formal and unspecialized, it contrasts with the knowledge and motivation aspects. In conclusion, it seems that the proposal’s exclusive approach to processes produces a contrary outcome, this is adding effort and terminological confusion to reproducibility activities.
