The puruha archaeological sites from rumicruz community (Calpi, Riobamba, Ecuador)

Abstract:

In 2016 we carried out a visual superficial archaeological survey in the Rumicruz community (Calpi, Ecuador). The objective of this work was to document the existence of archaeological sites to prevent their destruction, a first step to future studies with archaeological intervention to determine the social and cultural features of pre-Hispanic Puruha culture in this area. Puruha pottery fragments from different periods prior to European colonization were recovered, and also some fragments of Republican pottery and lithic metates were documented, which showed an important settlement in the surrounding area of the Chimborazo volcano. Three occupation zones were documented: a terraced hill with direct view of Chimborazo, a necropolis located on the plain near the current community, and a wall of indeterminate use situated at altitude.
