The results of a programme promoting the supplementation of iodine in pregnant women of Galicia


Abstract:

Objective: to evaluate the effect yodine supplementation with potassium iodine on pregnant women in Galicia. Subjects and Methods: random selection of pregnant women attended in Galicia. Design: intervention study. Measurements: urine iodine excretion median, prevalence of iodine deficiency in pregnant women. Results: significant increase of urine iodine excretion median globally (158 μg/L vs. 110.4 μg/L) and for each province 134 vs. 118.5, 167 vs. 110.4, 408 vs. 101.2 and 92 vs. 67.3 for Pontevedra, A Coruña, Ourense and Lugo were observed. Significant decrease in prevalence of pregnant women with iodine deficiency globally (47.6% vs. 68.2%) and in each province Pontevedra 53% vs. 64.1%, A Coruña 43.3% vs 67.3%, Ourense 16.8% vs. 67.4% y Lugo 66.1% vs. 85%, were observed. Conclusions: the campaign of iodine supplementation in pregnant women has showed partially efficacy, since globally normalization of urine iodine excretion median was observed, however, significant prevalence of pregnant women with iodine-deficiency persist.
