The role of concept learning in social studies textbook comprehension: A brief analysis
Abstract:
The social studies textbook continues to play a dominant role in instruction. It is a rare classroom that does not find the text carrying the load of teaching social studies content. In these classrooms students are frequently required to independently comprehend material directly from the textbook. In one study, Durkin and her colleagues at the Center for the Study of Reading observed teachers and students for three successive days in each of thiry-nine classrooms in fourteen school districts. In these classrooms the focus of observations was on comprehension instruction during both reading time and social studies time. Conclusions based on some 300 hours of systematic observation were revealing. Comprehension instruction did not occur at all during social studies time and only minimally during reading time.
