The role of social networks in natural disasters. The case of facebook and the earthquake in Ecuador in 2016

Abstract:

In this work we intend to analyze the role played by Facebook users in the transmission of information during the 2016 earthquake in Ecuador. The method used is mixed: quantitatively, the number of publications made during the first month after the earthquake was considered, An analysis has been carried out that shows the role of prosumers by users who turned the platform into a showcase for good and bad news, practical information and the exchange of messages between those affected. From the qualitative point of view, opinions are collected through semi-structured interviews with the special envoys who covered the first moments, to know their criteria regarding the use of the new platforms in the dissemination of information. This confirms the functionality of the social network to contribute to the dissemination of information not only in the event of social disclosure but also in case of emergencies.
