The role of the state in the post-political and post-democratic era of the untamed financial powers
Abstract:
In this paper we will explore the historical significance of a concept which, for doctrinaires of economic liberalism, would constitute a veritable oxymoron-namely, "market authoritarianism". We will discuss its genealogy, elucidate its defining features and, most importantly of all, examine its vast political consequences. Furthermore, we will focus on the fact that this market authoritarianism develops into even more aggressive forms than what has been termed financial fascism, since the markets have been becoming institutionalised in autonomous dynamics which are democratically uncontrollable and which inevitably lead to growing phenomena of severe de-democratisation. Using this context as a starting point, we will attempt to shed light on a crucial problem which has to do with the paradoxical role played by the State in the processes of resistance against the unfolding of this market authoritarianism, which leads, eventually, to a dangerously post-democratic situation.
