The transition to the covariant formulation of electromagnetism

Abstract:

Although it is considered that the electromanetic theory was born as a relativistic theory, this is seldom used in undergrad education when making the transition to the covariant four-dimensional formulation of electromagnetism. In this work we present a transition based on formal considerations arising from the three-dimensional equations of electromagnetism. This allows to motivate the transition, introduce notation and show that the equations take a more simple form and a more direct interpretation.
