The use of supplementary materials for teaching children in EFL classes
Abstract:
This study is titled “The use of supplementary materials for teaching children in EFL classes”; its focus is on whether the used materials were pertinent to the lessons, their appropriateness to students’ level and age, and their quality. This study was done in a private elementary school in Calderon, Quito. Ten classes were observed in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, with approximately 20 male and female students in each. The relevant aspects of each used supplementary materials were noted. Also, teachers and students were interviewed regarding their opinions and preferences of the materials. The bibliographical information was gathered to write the literature review, and the results of the class observations were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The types of supplementary materials most used for teaching children in EFL classes were, visual materials, audio materials, and realia. Specifically, the white board, pictures, dialogues, objects, songs, and stories. Generally, the used supplementary materials were pertinent to the class topics and objective, were selected according to the students’ age and level, and were of good quality.
