The use of Supplementary Materials in EFL Classes: A Comparative Analysis of Public and Private High Schools.
Abstract:
The present research examined the use of supplementary materials to teach students in EFL Classes of public and private high schools in Ecuador. Its main purpose was to find out whether or not teachers used supplementary materials, and if they were used, how pertinent, appropriate, and qualified those materials were in the classroom. This research was carried out at the three final years of two important high schools of Cuenca with adolescent students. The use of supplementary material was registered in data collection forms used for classifying five types of variables: visual, audio, audiovisual, realia, and online, in a period of observation during EFL classes where the teacher and students participated actively. Qualitative analysis of data was focused on the aspects of pertinence, appropriateness, and quality of materials that were used during the classes; quantitative analysis of data was focused on the variety of the same materials and the frequency of their use. Results showed that there were no big differences in the frequency of use of supplementary materials in EFL classes between public and private high schools in Ecuador.
