The utility of different definitions of metabolic syndrome in Andean population
Abstract:
A study on the determination of differences in the proportion of subjects diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome (MS), applied to Andean population with and without established cardiovascular diseases (CVD) was conducted. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP-III) criteria were used for the MS study. Both the diagnostic criteria for MS were applied to Colombian and Ecuadorian subjects, with and without the history of cardiovascular events (CVE). Every patient underwent a complete medical examination that included vital sings, anthropometrical measurements, fasting lipid profile, and glucose determination. The results show that the prevalence of MS is higher when IDF criteria is applied in relation to ATP-III criteria, and diagnostic concordance between the two criteria is 79.7%.
