Threats analysis of communications and information system in the national airspace system
Abstract:
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provides telecommunication infrastructure and information management system to facilitate the operation of the National Airspace System (NAS). The system includes communications, information, and networks such as voice and data communications products and services required to support day-to-day FAA operations. Same as other communication systems and information platform, the FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) and System Wide Information Management (SWIM) have security vulnerabilities that can lead to attack to the NAS. In this paper, we present the communications in different layers of NAS and investigate the security mechanism they use in FTI and SWIM. Finally, we analyze the threats of air/ground communications and show how an attacker can use different parts of NAS to apply an attack.
