Three dimensional finite element model for the hydro-bulge forming process

Abstract:

The integral hydro-bulge forming process is used in the manufacturing of single and multi-layered pressure and storage vessels. The manufacturing procedure, although simple in application, involves a complex three dimensional forming process that is difficult to quantify experimentally. As a result, the ABAQUS finite element code is utilized to model the hydro-bulge forming process in order to gain insight into its mechanics. Also, experimental strain and deflection data are collected through an automated data acquisition system for qualitative verification of the model. In this paper the results of the finite element simulation of the process and their corresponding comparison with experimental measurements and observations will be presented.
