Ticks of genera Ixodes Latreille and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) Koch (Acari: Ixodidae) in the collection of Zoología Agrícola, Decanato de Agronomía, UCLA, Lara, Venezuela

Abstract:

A list of species belonging to Ixodes Latreille and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) Koch from the Collection of Zoología Agrícola, Decanato de Agronomía, Universidad Centroccidental Lisandro Alvarado (UCLA) is provided. Revised specimens consisted in samples containing labeled hard ticks with the following information: species name, locality, collecting date, and host (if available). Information was included in a data base in which a code number was assigned as follows: CZA (Agricultural Zoology Collection)-Ixo (Ixodidae) plus a four digit number. Species were determined by using taxonomical keys. A total of 50 samples containing 646 specimens (268 adults, 378 larvae) from different geographical zones were found. Nine species were registered: Ixodes affinis Neumann, 1889; I. cookei Packard, 1867; Ixodes dentatus Marx, 1899; Ixodes kingi Bishopp, 1911; Ixodes loricatus Neumann, 1899; Ixodes luciae Sénevet, 1935; Ixodes pacificus Cooley and Kohls, 1945; Ixodes scapularis Say, 1821; Ixodes venezuelensis Kohls, 1953. Also Rhipicephalus (B.) microplus and Rhipicephalus (B.) annulatus were recorded. © 2011, Sociedad Venezolana de Entomología.
