Towards a method for the integration of IoT and GIS applications deployed on cloud platforms

Abstract:

The use of the Internet for the deployment of GIS applications allows the adoption of technologies such as IoT and cloud facilitating the automation of process such as sensor data collection and providing a technological infrastructure with high storage and processing capacities. However, heterogeneity in the technology of IoT devices and resources offered by cloud providers hinders the integration and interaction. Most current proposals addressing IoT and cloud technology integration focus on platforms that automate integration and application development support tools, but do not provide a guide that allows the definition of a flexible architecture that integrates services of a GIS application independently of its technology and provides support in the design of infrastructure in stages of deployment of both cloud environments and IoT. In this paper we propose a method for the development of GIS applications that facilitates the integration of IoT devices and cloud platforms as a technological deployment infrastructure. The feasibility of this proposal has been illustrated by the design and implementation of a GIS application that collects air quality data using sensors with a real-time IoT paradigm, and uses the Google Cloud platform for deployment.
