Transitional cell cancer of the bladder: use of firocoxib as the only treatment.
Abstract:
A study to evaluate the clinical efficiency and tolerance of the non steroid anti-inflammatory drug as the sole chemotherapy agent for treatment of two male and two female dogs, aged between 8-14 years, is described. Animals were treated with firocoxib by mouth, 5mg/kg per day. Results showed remission of clinical signs 5-10 days following start of treatment and partial remission of neoplasia after 4 weeks but not of metastasis. No secondary treatment effects were observed. Absence of clinical signs were observed at 45-120 days following start of treatment. Survival from diagnosis until euthanasia was between 180 and 300 days. Firocoxib, formulated specifically for dogs, is recommended as a palliative treatment.
