Travel-associated dengue-United States, 2005.
Abstract:
This report summarizes information on the 96 travel-associated dengue cases in the USA, in 2005. Of these cases, 53 were females. The median age of the 83 patients for whom age was reported was 43 years. The travel destinations of 73 patients were identified. 32 (44%) reported travel to Mexico during the 2 weeks before illness onset, 19 (26%) to Central America, 16 (22%) to the Caribbean, and 6 (8%) to Asia. Of the 24 patients with reported clinical symptoms, 6 had at least one haemorrhagic symptom. 17 of the 96 patients were hospitalized, including one who died. It is suggested that travellers to tropical areas can reduce their risk for dengue by using mosquito repellents and avoiding exposure to mosquitoes.
