Treatment of acute myocardial infarction: New perspectives
Abstract:
Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, with its most common form being acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The epidemiological impact of this entity is severe, promoting the development of new therapeutic alternatives to allow improved patient outcomes. Given the high prevalence of this condition and its growing pattern in recent decades, it has become a priority to work on strategies addressing aspects currently unattended by treatments, which at present focus on achieving prompt reperfusion and reducing the extension of the infarction. Nevertheless, new treatment lines indicate that it may be possible to prevent post-infarction cardiac remodeling by utilizing various types of stem cells, offering viable alternatives for patients who are not candidates for percutaneous coronary interventions. The objective of this review is to assess the new strategies for the treatment of AMI and the viability of their use in human models.
