Tu1205 SAFETY & EFFICACY OF SELF-EXPANDING METAL STENTS FOR PALLIATION IN UNRESECTABLE ESOPHAGEAL CANCER: FIRST OUTCOMES FROM AN ECUADORIAN PROSPECTIVE COHORT STUDY.
Abstract:
Background Esophageal cancer is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage (III-IV), commonly unresectable, with a 5-year survival rate of 10%. Due to the high morbidity and mortality after surgical palliation, the placement of self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) is a palliative choice for malignant esophageal stenosis. In Ecuador, SEMS placement started in 2010 at Instituto Oncológico Nacional (ION) SOLCA Guayaquil, a national referral cancer center. Aim To assess the safety & efficacy of SEMS in the palliative treatment of malignant esophageal stenosis due to unresectable esophageal cancer (stage III-IV) in Ecuadorians. Methods Observational, analytic, longitudinal single-arm cohort study. Protocol study was approved by Institutional Review Board. Date from patients with unresectable esophageal cancer (stage III-IV) who underwent to SEMS placement between 2010-2016 was prospectively recorded and …
