Tufa buildups and landscape evolution: Chronology and morphogenetic phases in the high Ebro basin (Burgos province)

Abstract:

Tufa buildups of the high Ebro basin river are geomorphological elements of high environmental interest. In High Ebro basin geomorphological evolution has been led by the incision of the river Ebro, the intense karstification and the tufaceous filling of the main valleys. In this paper some relict and present-day tufas have been studied; three Quaternary tufa sedimentation stages have been established: first one corresponds to Late Pleistocene, and the others have an Holocene age. During the Holocene, coinciding with first human settlement, tufa sedimentation stopped and the down cutting processes on valley deposits started on. The erosion process on tufa buildings may be caused both human activity and complex responses of the natural system.
