Tuning of power system stabilizers—An ecuadorian case study


Abstract:

Proper tuning of power system stabilizers (PSS) improves the damping of electromechanical oscillations caused by transient phenomena (small and large disturbances) occurred in power systems. This paper describes the application of two methodologies for PSS tuning with the aim of improving the operating conditions of the Ecuadorian National Interconnected Power System (SNI). First, the classical method based on the Single-Machine Infinite-Bus (Heffron-Phillips) model is used to tune the main generating stations of the SNI. This methodology is complemented by using the Mean-Variance Mapping Optimization (MVMO) algorithm which helps tuning PSS of multi-machine systems. The effectiveness of the PSS tuned parameters is verified not only on the improvement of the damping of the oscillatory modes but also on the system's response under electromechanical transient disturbances.
