UPFC simulation and control using the ATP/EMTP and MATLAB/simulink programs

Abstract:

The UPFC is one of the most important Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), since it can provide various types of compensation. The UPFC is implemented by using two voltage source converters which are connected through a common DC link capacitor. Each converter is coupled to the power system with a transformer. The paper deals with the mathematical modeling and analysis of a Senoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) based UPFC. A model-free approach for the selection of the controller may also be an acceptable solution. The design and simulation of a matrix PI controller and a fuzzy logic controller have been carried out. From the simulation results, it is demonstrated that it can control real and reactive power. Simulations using the Electromagnetic Transients Program (ATP/EMTP) and MATLAB/Simulink program are shown. The dynamic performance in terms of accuracy, speed, stability, robustness and simplicity are compared. © 2006 IEEE.
