University, de-colonization, and other interculturality. Beyond the “hubris of point zero”

Abstract:

Universities in the Americas require essential transformations that go beyond the mere academic willpower of these universities. Such transformations require a political and epistemological effort by those who believe that an other university is possible. This paper seeks to contribute to this long-standing effort, reflecting from a hermeneutic perspective on the contemporary university, characterized as a replicator of one-dimensional Eurocentric culture developed by the “hubris of point zero” and the coloniality of power and knowledge. Conclusions are that it is necessary to impel university transformation by de-colonizing from a transcultural, transdisciplinary and intercultural other perspective, where knowledge, skills and indigenous and Afro epistemes can be incorporated in all university structures, thus promoting a genuine dialogue of diverse forms of knowledge in a decolonial key.
