Urbanization and nature in the delta. 3 critical episodes of the transformation of the Guayas river delta (Ecuador)

Abstract:

The present article analyses in historical perspective, three lapses of the transformation of the Guayas river delta in order to examine the contradictions and interdependencies between its urbanism and ecology. The study is premised on the idea that a reading of urban-ecological transformation of the territory can from historical perspective support an understanding of 'urbanization of nature' by considering not only the city but other sites and ecologies linked to it, the political struggles that shape them and their uneven development. The study discusses key themes on Guayaquil's urbanism in its interaction with the hydrographical context of the Guayas river: the ecology of pre-columbian settlement, the modern interdependency of urban transformation and the deltaic territory and the effect of neoliberal expansion over the production of nature.
