Use of Social Networks and Other Digital Platforms as Tools for Education. Systematic Literature Review

Abstract:

Social networks are increasingly used in education due to their great potential to support the teaching-learning process. Student participation in face-to-face environments, in some cases, is diminished by a lack of confidence and self-esteem, that is why using social networks is an effective way to decrease frustration, isolation, and loneliness of the students. The objective of this research is to carry out a systematic descriptive and literature study. This study focuses on the investigation of the main benefits and identification of the use of social networks and digital platforms, such as Virtual Learning Environments (VLE), at university education. 52 scientific and review articles from the last 15 years are studied and analyzed from 5 bibliographic databases: Scopus, EBSCO, ScienceDirect, ERIC, and Dialnet, which answer three research questions. The results obtained present the benefits of social networks in universities as the most-used social network and technological platforms in this field.
