Use of information technologies in the coverage of the earthquakes in Peru (2007) and Ecuador (2016)
Abstract:
The research presents the use by journalists of information technologies in the coverage of earthquakes in Peru and Ecuador, August 15, 2007 and April 2016, respectively. The methodology is qualitative through semi-structured interviews to journalists and experts, developed during April and May 2018. Eight journalists participated: Three of Peru and five of Ecuador, working in the major print media in each country: El Comercio in Perú; and, El Universo and El Comercio in Ecuador. The aim of the investigation is to determine the relevance of information technologies in the coverage of disasters. The hypotheses are: 1) The journalists used with greater intensity the new technologies than conventional ones; and, 2) Thanks to the evolution of the digital communication tools, coverage of the earthquake in Ecuador won in detail in front of Peru. Journalists and media companies have faced the coverage of earthquakes in new technologies and supported new narratives. Considering the distance in the time of the disasters analysed is relevant to know that the work of journalists continues to generate trust in people to be oriented so agile and direct.
