Usefulness of doppler flowmetry in preeclamptic patients with intrauterine grow restriction

Abstract:

Introduction: Doppler flowmetry is a control and evaluation method used to determine the culmination of pregnancy, allows better understanding of fetoplacental dynamics, which makes it possible to avoid any risk that may harm fetal maturation, and in turn prematurity, low birth weight and preeclampsia pathologies. Objective: To determine the usefulness of color doppler flow imaging for diagnosis and management of intrauterine growth restriction in preeclamptic pregnant women. Methods: A non-experimental, cross-sectional, comparative and descriptive study was carried out in the ultrasound department of Bolívar Clinic in Babahoyo, Ecuador, during 2013. A total of 96 pregnant women aged 15-40 years participated. The following interventions were performed: Doppler flowmetry, placental brain index test, middle cerebral artery/umbilical artery. For the analysis, we used the descriptive indicators among the variables. Results: The placental brain index test was decompensated in 53.1% of the women, the volume of amniotic fluid was decreased in 46.9%, and the most vulnerable gestational age was 32-37 weeks of gestation. Conclusions: Doppler flowmetry with the placental brain index test is an effective and safe indicator of fetal well-being, when this test is normal, and a pbkp_redictor of adverse outcome, as well as a marker of fetal hypoxia, when altered, becoming a useful tool for the decision to interrupt pregnancy when the fetus health in danger, or to maintain the pregnancy when its behavior is normal.
