Validation of MODIS aerosol products at level 3 over differents coastal sites in the Mediterranean

Abstract:

Aerosols play an important role in the atmosphere due to their high spatial and temporal variability, and therefore they constitute one of the most important sources of uncertainty in the estimation of the total radiative energy budget in the Earth. Aerosols also affect air quality, human health and visibility. The aerosol properties and their temporal evolution in the atmosphere can be estimated by using different complementary approaches. On one hand, in situ or ground based techniques are accurate and have a good temporal resolution, but they are very limited in spatial representability. On the other hand, remote sensing instruments on board satellite platforms have a much lower temporal resolution, but they are very useful thanks to their spatial coverage. Although remote sensing products are becoming crucial for atmospheric applications, their products still need continuous validation. This validation can be done by comparing their products to ground based measurements.
