Valorisation of sludges for glaze production

Abstract:

The results of an industrial scale study, conducted by the Instituto de Tecnologia Ceramica on behalf of ceramic tile producer Tau Ceramica (part of Taulell SA), on the possibility of valorising the sludge produced in wastewater treatment are presented. The objectives were to determine the feasibility of recycling glazing sludges in engobes and glazes in order to achieve greater sludge valorisation than is presently the case and, secondly, to conduct a technical and economic analysis of the various sludge recycling options. It was concluded that: the sludges should not contain any inks (the wastewater needs to be suitably separated); possible sludge reuse in production floor tile engobes and glazes without reformulation is less than 10%, while sludge reuse in wall tile engobes and glazes is even more restricted.
