Valuation of ecosystem services to assess river restoration projects
Abstract:
A growing number of academics and practitioners call for the consideration of the benefits of ecosystems to support restoration. In river restoration, anthropocentric valuation has gained ground in large part due to the development of the ecosystem services (ES) concept. The main objective of this chapter is to provide a useful insight for practitioners and researchers into the valuation of ES for assessing river restoration projects. For this purpose, this chapter examines some important implications of valuing ES in river restoration. These are the selection of ES to be valuated and the assessment of conflicts, the consideration of temporal and spatial heterogeneities, and the selection of ES valuation methods.
