Vanadium carbide coarsening in steels subjected to normalizing and induction hardening heat treatments
Abstract:
The effects of both normalizing and induction hardening heat treatments on vanadium carbide precipitates that originally formed during thermomechanical processing of a vanadium- bearing medium carbon steel have been evaluated. Coarsening, incomplete dissolution and reprecipitation of vanadium carbide particles occurred during a normalizing heat treatment cycle. Induction hardening caused an increase in the average size of vanadium carbide particles throughout the outer layer that underwent austenitization. Evidence for dissolution of very fine vanadium carbide particles and their reprecipitation in the induction hardened layer was also observed.
