Vibriosis in larvae of the tropical bivalve Euvola (Pecten) ziczac
Abstract:
Massive mortalities have been recorded in the larval culture system of the tropical bivalve Euvola ziczac in a hatchery in the south coast of the Gulf of Cariaco, Venezuela. Two halophilic vibrio, Vibrio anguillarum and Vibrio alginolyticus, were responsible for the epizootics. Highest population densities of vibrio-like bacteria were found around the culture rafts of pompanos Trachinutus carolinus and mussel Perna perna. Measures taken to reduce population density of vibrio-like bacteria within the larval rearing system and in the area around the hatchery proved successful and allowed larval and postlarval development with an increase of 35% in the survival rate. -from English summary
