Voice and movement alerts integration in a blind navigation system and service

Abstract:

We report the successful design and implementation of an obstacle detection device within the mobility pathway of visually impaired students in the library of blind people located within the general library of the Technical University of Ambato. This project addresses the creation of two modules, a master and a slave, which together forms a body area network and through ultrasonic sensors acquire information from nearby obstacles and immediately inform the user through voice and motion alerts. The master module is located at the front and it is responsible for detecting obstacles at the top and playing voice alerts. The slave module is located in the middle of the user to detect medium and inferior obstacles, which provides movement alerts. In addition, the user can access an audio guide by pressing a button on the slave module in order to move from the library door to the blinds section.
