Volcano Storytelling

Abstract:

The documentary film industry's efforts to maximize viewership can result in products, which blur the boundaries between scientific reporting and reality TV. At its best the volcano documentaries produced by talented film makers are able to both teach and entertain responsibly using visually stunning footage. At their worst,'documentaries' may distort the truth, betray the message of their expert voices, and can be culturally insensitive. For many scientists it can be frustrating to interact with an industry whose primary focus is the bottom line.
